In Spain there are different levels of administration: Central Government, Autonomous Communities (regions) and Local Authorities, all of which can impose taxes for different reasons and according to their specific powers.
Some of these taxes are sent to you, as a car or house owner, and can even be arranged as a direct debit, and once it is set up doesn’t require any more intervention.
Taxes owed to the Spanish Tax Agency (Central Government) however will need to be paid as a Self-Declaration, which must be presented at the appropriate time and failure to do so would result in penalties and extra charges.
Therefore it is important to know and plan your fiscal obligations right from the start, as taxes do affect everybody, not just the wealthy.
